The South African Contingent (Chase)

Gonna kick things off with a big What Up!!! and welcome to Our Poker Journey. My name is Chase and I’m the 3rd member of this degenerate trio of poker players.

Where did it all start? Ok let me think about this one, hhhmmmmmm… well I guess I kinda always knew what poker was from watching old western films and things like that, you know, the kinda films were the guy says “well I’ll see your 2000 and raise you 10000” and then he suddenly gets shot in the back! But even after watching such high quality value raises in these films, I never really knew the ins and outs of the game. I remember when I was really young (I’m talking like 8/9 years old), my mum would teach me how to play really bad card games like rummy, solitaire and another game kinda similar to BIG 2 ( I forgot the name), and damn I used to love beating her in those games. It wasn’t until I had been living in Edinburgh for a while, getting home from work at 2am watching the poker shows on late night telly, did I actually start to become interested in what these guys on TV were doing, why they were doing it, and how the dynamics of the game worked.

I’ve been playing for about 4 years now and this is how I really got hooked… I work in a bar/restaurant down by the shore in Leith and everyday on my way to work I would pass by a family owned Mexican restaurant ( The family wasn’t Mexican though, they were Italian), one day I noticed a small poster in the window advertising a £5 buy-in no-limit Texas Hold Em tournament every Thursday night, so the very next Thursday I headed down to the restaurant to play some poker. I walk in and straight away I recognise the lady behind the bar as well as her son, it’s the same people who own a coffee shop just off The Royal Mile next door to a pub I worked in for about 2 years, and where I used to frequently visit for a morning coffee and croissant. Damn Edinburgh’s small! And this is how I got to know Stefano. So every Thursday evening we would play poker in the restaurant until our eyes bled. Playing in the restaurant eventually led to playing in other pubs, which eventually led to playing in the casino on a regular basis.

I met Chris and his girlfriend Kerry through Stef, and I guess we soon came to realise that we had very similar interests and that we all play on a similar level ( maybe Chris and Stef will disagree with that one lol). Currently we play in a regular game on a Sunday night and make frequent appearances in the local casino tournaments. Its nice to have friends who have the same passion for an awesome game, they really make me think about what I’m doing and inspire me to improve my game and play the best I can. I think the 3 of us have different strengths and weaknesses which is why I believe we can learn a shit load from each other which will eventually lead to each one of us drastically improving our game and taking it to the next level.

As the other dudes have mentioned, all 3 of us want to start playing in bigger, more competetive tournaments in the near future, but it is hard as we all have regular jobs and don’t have the time and freedom that a lot of thes young guns do. But hopefully, with the help of each other, we’ll be cashing in big tourney’s soon and showing these youngster’s and pro’s a thing a two

A big shout out to everybody that comes accross our blog and gives it a read, every hit we get is an ispiration to us all.

Much love and respect

Peace out for now

One day I will have a WSOP Main Event chip stack 🙂
